8 Day Southern Namibia Tour

During these 8 Days we take you on a journey like no other.

We visit the magnificent Quiver Tree and Giants Play Ground on our first day, making sure we visit them during sunset and enjoying a dinner under the open skies. We also visit the second biggest canyon in the world (Fish River Canyon).

From there we pass by the Wild Horses before we make our way to the small coastal town called Lüderitz, first founded by Bartolomeu Dias in the 1400’s and named after Adolf Lüderitz who purchased it from the Nama Chief, Josef Frederiks II in 1883.

This little town is very rich in history, and we will visit the ghost town Kolmanskop sharing the history behind this town with you. From Lüderitz we move to Sossusvlei before we end our tour back in Windhoek.

Itinerary

Day 1

We are travelling south, taking the B1 towards Rehoboth. We turn left onto C21 towards Camelthorn Lodge, situated in the centre of the Kalahari Desert where we will spend the night.

We will take a walk with the Bushmen and enjoy a sundowner on the Red Dunes.

Distance: +/- 250km 
Duration: around 3 hours with the stop-over

Day 2 & 3

Early morning, after breakfast, we travel to Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world, breathtakingly spectacular; it is one of the African Continent’s most wondrous geological features.

A Unique place for spectacular landscape photography! We also visit Ai/Ais, natural hot water springs and beautiful lodge.

Accommodation: 2 nights at the safari lodge near the Fish River Canyon

Distance: around 465 km 4hrs drive with stops, on tar and gravel roads

Day 4

We make our way towards the small town called Aus.

Here we can visit the Wild Horses. These horses incredibly adjusted to the harsh, dry and dangers of the desert conditions. Recently they are also threatened by Hyenas, but on any given day they are truly a beautiful site to see. 

You will spend 1 night at the safari lodge 
Meals: breakfast, dinner. 
Distance: around 300 km (tarred and gravel roads). 
Duration: about 5 hours with stop-over 

Day 5

After breakfast, make our way to the small coastal town of Luderitz, named after the German trader, Adolf Lüderitz, situated on the Atlantic Coast.

We make a quick stop around 10 km from Lüderitz, at the historical ‘Ghost Town’ of Kolmanskop, a town that started with the diamond rush when diamonds were discovered near Lüderitz but became a “ghost town” when the diamond rush ended leaving behind only empty buildings.

Short visit to the historical monument, granite cross, known as the Diaz Cross, set in the sands of the Namib by Portuguese sailor Bartholomeus Diaz, when he first landed at the Namibian coast centuries ago.

Distance: around 250 km (tarred roads)

Duration: around 3 hours with the stop-over

Day 6

Shortly after breakfast we travel to world-famous Sossusvlei on the way admiring picturesque vistas and incredible, desert landscape.

After the long day’s drive, you are comfortably settled for an appetizing dinner and deserved rest at the stylish lodge near the Sossusvlei.

Day 7

We leave early in the morning, just before sunrise for Sossusvlei.

We start off by climbing Dune 45, this is a must-do and we recommend this to everyone. After Dune 45 it is off to the surreal Dead Vlei, a place of vast desert pan where dried-up, ancient acacias stand silent in the open-air gallery.

If you are up for it, you can take on climbing one of the highest dunes on Earth, the “Big Daddy”’ or “Big Mama”. Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei are considered to be one of the most photogenic and some of the most photographed places on Earth and make for beautiful memories! During the 2 Days visit, we also visit the Sesriem Canyon. 

Be on the lookout, you may just see the occasional wildlife: ostriches, Oryx, bat-eared foxes, springboks, possibly cheetah and various birds inhabiting the desert. 

Optional activity in the afternoon: Hot Air Ballooning

Day 8

In the morning depart for Windhoek, vibrant capital of Namibia.

En route, plenty of time for the last curio shopping, visit at the local, open-air craft market and taking last photographs of the African savanna. We arrive in Windhoek just in time for lunch at your hotel.

Afternoon optional activities:

  • Visit to the Christuskirche
  • Visit to Katatura and introduce you to one of the traditional hang out places and foods.
  • Parliament building
